A good article about the 'real costs' of owning a Newfoundland dog.

Welcome, and may I introduce you to Kaylar's Starr E. Nite or K.D. She is a Newfoundland Landseer dog.
Newfoundlands can be solid black, Landseer (white & black), bronze, and the rare blue/gray. Sir
Edwin Henry Landseer depicted a white & black Newfoundland (Paul Pry) in his oil painting in the mid
1800's. When people would see a white & black Newfoundland dogs, they would say "There goes one of
Landseer's dogs". Later the name was shortened to Landseer. This color/pattern is always a white field
with a black head, black saddle, black rump, with limited black speckling in the white areas. Landseer
is the only Newfoundland color/pattern that has a name.
As for KD, she is 119 pounds, with 3 inch long fur, 28 inches at the shoulders, and is almost seven years old. She eats 2 cups of kibble in the morning and 2 cups of kibble in the evening. She also gets occasional meat dog treats and chews. She goes on a 30 minute evening walk. She is combed 15 minutes every morning, so her fur is very soft. About every two weeks she gets a bath. Bathing and drying takes about two hours. She is very friendly and loves pets from everyone. She likes visiting and goes regularly with me on errands. We often stop for lunch at the outdoor seating restaurants so we can visit with friends.

Painted by Sir Edwin Landseer in 1838. This painting of Paul Pry gave the breed its name.
This is KD at 5 years old.
This is KD's crate. It is her special space and gives her a sense of security.
This is called 'Newfie Rug'. Most Newfs have this behavior.
It is one of the behaviors that makes
them so endearing. Could you resist this face?
Every year in the fall, the seniors (dogs over 7 years old) get together.
The party includes a
liver cake for them, lunch for the people, games, and stories of beloved newfies.
This is the group
photo for the 2007 Seniors Picnic. KD is laying down, the third from the right.
Every year KD and I do breed education at Pet Expo. In May 2008, Pet Expo was at the Orange County Fair Grounds. KD is 11.5 years old in these two photos.
Every year people come from all over California to visit with KD at Pet Expo. She is always a big draw.
It was 4 blocks from the car to the exhibit area, and it was 98 degrees that day; so KD got to ride into the exhibit. It was reminiscent of a queen in her coach in a public procession.
